Wesley International School Profile
History and Background: Wesley
International School (WIS) is located in Malang, East Java,
Indonesia. WIS is a small, Christian International School founded in
1972 to serve English speaking missionary children and other
expatriates in our area. Up until 1997 we were only an elementary
school. In 1997 the decision was taken to expand the school up
through high school. The first senior class graduated in 2001.
Currently we have
about 100 students K-12, from 13 different countries. We are
a member of the Association of Christian Schools International
(ACSI).

Resources and
Environment: Wesley International School provides
its students with a Library of over 15,000 volumes, technology rich
classrooms, Science Lab, Computer Lab, Gymnasium, Art and Music
Centers, Athletic Field, Fitness Center and a spacious, manicured
campus. The school is located in Malang, a leading center of
education in Indonesia with over 40 colleges and universities.
East Java is culturally diverse and ethnically rich, with an
abundance of opportunities for cultural exchange, outreach,
community development, festivals, programs, concerts, dramas and
museums. In the immediate region are located towering
volcanoes, scenic hiking trails, roaring rivers, pristine
waterfalls, and immaculate beaches.
Curriculum: Wesley follows
an American curriculum with some adaptations to our
international student population. Our high school program is a
college preparatory course. The Language of instruction is
English.
The
academic program is organized on a 2 semester
schedule. A maximum load is 7 classes per semester with students
carrying seven 50-minute classes a day.
A minimum of 24
credits is required for graduation. 1 credit = 1
year; 0.5 credits = 1 semester. Graduation requirements include: 4
credits (4 years) English; 3 credits (3 years) mathematics; 3
credits (3 years) science; 2 credits (2 years) social studies (one
of which must be United States History for US citizens); 4 credits
(4 years) Bible (one for each year at WIS); 2 credits (2 years)
foreign language; 2 credits (4 semesters) PE; 0.5 credits (1
semester) senior project (free research project undertaken in
12th grade); 0.5 credits (1 semester) Service Project; 3
credits (6 semesters) of other electives.
Programs: Non-native English
speakers have ESL courses from Kindergarten – Grade 12.
Dramas, musicals, and concerts are a part of school life Other
events include Fine Arts Festival, Field Day, Sports Tournaments,
Science Fair, Christmas Bazaar, school camps and
Carnival.
Grading and Ranking: WIS
assigns letter grades using a 4.0 system. Letter
grades are assigned as follows:
A
= 90% - 100%; B = 80% - 89%; C = 70% - 79%; D = 60% - 69%; F = 59%
and less.
All credit classes are included
in computing grade point average and class rank. Grades are recorded
on the transcript, and class rank and grade point average are
computed in January and May.
College
Attendance History
Almost all WIS graduates contuinue their education at
a 4 year institution.
Alumni of WIS have studied at major
universities in South Korea, United States, Australia, and Canada,
including Harvard University, Duke University, Wheaton
College, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea
University, and University of Western Australia.
